Byer i Vesthimmerland

Visit five exciting towns in Vesthimmerland. All the towns have good shopping opportunities and they each have their own unique charm.

Aars is a real shopping town with about 80 shops, located in the heart of Himmerland.

Both the nature around the town and the town itself has a lot to offer. The history of Aars is as old as it is exciting. 2000 years ago the splendid Cimbri lived here and even today the population is known as Cimbri. You can experience their history at Museumcenter Aars where you find more than 12.000 years worth of archaeology and cultural history. Among many other artifacts you can see the Gunderstrup Vessel which was found north east of Borremose.

The Danish Present-day museum in Aars is run by volunteers and has one of Denmark’s largest collections of everyday life from the year 1900 and forwards.

The town squares are works of art themselves. They are decorated by the internationally recognized artists Per Kirkeby, Kirsten Ortwed and Poul Gernes.

Recently, Aars has become home to an indoor shopping centre and the Music house ALFA which is also designed by Per Kirkeby. Read more at: Aars.dk
Løgstør is an old and cosy borough.

Løgstør is the front-runner for tourism in Vesthimmerland. Nature and a wealth of various experiences make the area one of Denmark’s best and most exciting places for the entire family.

You can experience a cosy harbour environment – particularly around Kunsttorvet (the art square) where there is plenty of art as well as the Limfiord Museum. This is also where you find the famous King Frederik the 7th Canal. The area around the canal offers plenty of opportunities for walks since the canal is 4.4 kilometres long. The canal was dug by 400 workers that arrived from Germany between 1856 and 1861. King Frederik the 7th officially opened the canal.

You will find a wealth of accommodation opportunities around Løgstør – hotels, youth hostel, camp site as well as cosy Bed and Breakfasts are all available. You can also find restaurants and gastronomy for any taste. For instance, you can enjoy a light meal at the bakery or Hos Tetzlaff.

Throughout the year there are lots of activities from the Mussel Festival to the famous race of old wooden vessels. Read much more at: Muslingebyen.dk
Farsø is located in the heart of Vesthimmerland

Even though the town is not very large it has much more to offer than you would expect from a town the size of Farsø.

Aside from its large green park the town is also home to museums honouring the former inhabitants of the town the authors Johannes V. Jensen who won a Nobel Prize and his sister and female rights activist Thit Jensen as well as a large sports centre in and around the Queen Ingrid Halls.

As a place to shop Farsø has a large indoor shopping centre with three supermarkets and 15 different shops as well as a long main street with more than 20 different shops, banks, a DIY centre, a gallery, a pharmacy and several nice restaurants.

Together all these shops have several events and activities throughout the year. Read much more at: Farsoe.dk
Hvalpsund is a cosy small town with a unique harbour environment close to nature and with plenty of atmosphere.

The ferry Mary sails every ½ hour. The many colourful sails on the yachts light up the harbour. Go window shopping along the many small shops with arts and crafts and galleries while walking through town.

If you arrive late in the day the local supermarket has long opening hours.

Go fishing from the Put & Take lake or the Limfiord and catch your own supper. If you are not lucky the fish market always has a good selection.

From the restaurants you can admire the evening sun while enjoying a meal where everybody finds something they like.

You should also visit the Manor Hessel and the arts and crafts shops in Hvalpsund.

From Hvalpsund the preserved part of the Louns peninsula is only a short drive away. Here, you will find several marked hiking trails. Read much more at: Hvalpsund-by.dk
Aalestrup is actually a fairly young town that was constructed in the 1890’s when the railroad reached Vesthimmerland.

The main street is partly one-way. A quiet walk through the town will give you a wide selection of everyday goods and you can also stop by the gallery.

If you are interested in theater there are performances and shows on the outdoor scene Knaberscene. Or how about visiting one of the restaurants where you can enjoy a nicely cooked meal.

The Danish Cycling Museum tells you the story of the bicycle from the first one made of wood and without pedals to a completely modern Tour de France bicycle from 1954. If you walk across the cemetery you will pass by a memorial for a World War II aircraft.

The rose garden is home to more than 200 different kinds of beautiful, colourful and fragrant roses. Read much more at: Borgerforeningen Aalestrup
